When you need a GIF
Some forums, older apps and email signature tools only accept GIF. Each JPG becomes a still GIF with up to 256 colours, chosen to match your photo as closely as possible.
Questions
Why does my photo look grainy as a GIF?
GIF can only show 256 colours at once, while a photo has thousands. Smooth skies and skin tones show it most. Logos, drawings and screenshots look fine.
Can I make an animated GIF from several photos?
Not yet. Each photo becomes its own still GIF.
Can I do this without a website?
On Windows, Paint can save a photo as GIF. On a Mac, Preview can export GIF if you hold the Option key while choosing the format.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Your phone or computer does the converting, inside the browser. Load the page, turn on airplane mode and try it: it still works.
