Questions

Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC?

Since 2017 iPhones save photos as HEIC by default. A HEIC is about half the size of a JPG of the same quality, so your phone holds twice as many photos. The catch is that Windows, many websites and older apps still can’t open them, which is why you need a JPG.

Can I do this without a website?

Often, yes. On iPhone, Settings, then Photos, then Transfer to Mac or PC set to Automatic makes your iPhone hand over JPGs when you copy photos to a computer by cable. To stop taking HEIC photos at all, go to Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. On a Mac, Preview can export a HEIC as JPG (File, then Export). This page is quicker when you already have a pile of HEIC files, or you’re on Windows or Android.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, on your phone or computer. To check, load this page, turn on airplane mode and convert a photo. It still works, because nothing needs to leave your device.

Will converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?

At the default Best setting you won’t see a difference. JPGs come out larger than the HEIC, often around twice the size, because JPG compresses less efficiently. Tap the options button and choose Balanced or Smaller if you need smaller files for email or an upload form.

Does the JPG keep the date the photo was taken?

Yes. The date taken comes across, so the JPG sorts into the right place in your camera roll. Photos also come out the right way up.

Is there a limit on how many photos I can convert?

No. It’s free, with no sign-up and no daily limit. Photos are converted one by one so your phone doesn’t run out of memory. On a phone, 50 or so at a time works well.

Why can’t Windows open HEIC files?

Windows needs two extra extensions from the Microsoft Store, HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions, and the second one isn’t always free. Converting to JPG is often quicker, and JPGs open everywhere.

What happens to Live Photos?

You get the still photo as a JPG. The short video that makes it move is a separate file and isn’t included.
