When PNG is the right choice
PNG is the format designers, editing apps and some websites prefer, because it never loses detail when you save again. If you plan to crop, mark up or edit a photo several times, start from a PNG. For everyday sharing, JPG is smaller and works everywhere.
Questions
Should I choose PNG or JPG?
Choose JPG for sharing, email and upload forms: the files are much smaller and look the same. Choose PNG when you’ll keep editing the photo, need a lossless copy, or an app or website asks for PNG. A PNG of a phone photo is often 5 to 10 times bigger than the JPG.
Can I do this without a website?
One at a time, yes. On a Mac, open the photo in Preview, choose File, then Export, and pick PNG. On recent iPhones, the Files app can convert a single image: touch and hold it, then Quick Actions, then Convert Image. This page is faster for a batch, and works on Windows and Android too.
Is the PNG really lossless?
PNG keeps every pixel exactly as it is, so nothing is lost when the PNG is saved, or saved again. The HEIC itself was compressed by your phone when the photo was taken, and that can’t be undone, but converting to PNG adds no further loss.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Your browser does the conversion on your phone or computer. Load this page, switch on airplane mode and try it: it still works.
Why are my PNG files so large?
PNG stores photos without lossy compression, so a 12 megapixel photo can easily be 15 to 25 MB. That’s normal. If you need a small file, use HEIC to JPG instead.
