What is a CR2 file?
CR2 is the RAW format of Canon EOS cameras from roughly 2004 to 2018, such as the 5D Mark IV, 80D and Rebel series. Newer Canons save CR3.
How RAW to JPG works here
Every camera saves a ready-made JPEG preview inside its RAW file: it’s what you see on the camera’s screen, with the camera’s colours and picture style applied. We take that preview out and save it as a JPG, on your device. It’s quick, needs no RAW software, and looks like the photo you saw when you took it.
Most cameras store a full-size preview. A few older models store a smaller one. Either way, the size is shown before you save.
Questions
Can I do this without a website?
Canon’s free Digital Photo Professional app opens CR2 files and exports JPEG. On a Mac, Photos and Preview open CR2 too. On Windows 11, the Photos app opens them with the free Raw Image Extension.
My Canon saves CR3. Does that work?
Not yet. CR3 is a newer, different layout. Until we support it, Canon’s Digital Photo Professional can convert CR3.
Can I adjust exposure or white balance?
Not here. You get the camera’s own JPEG, with the settings you shot with. To edit the RAW data itself, use a RAW editor such as your camera maker’s free app, Lightroom or darktable.
Are my RAW files uploaded anywhere?
No. RAW files are big, and they never leave your device. Everything happens in your browser, even in airplane mode.
